REGENTS' EXAM INFORMATION

An Overview

The Regents' Test measures college-level writing and reading skills. The Essay test presents four topics and allows a choice of one on which to write an essay. The Reading test contains nine reading passages, each followed by six multiple-choice items. One hour is allowed for each of the Essay and Reading tests. Time designated for the test session includes check-in and seating, oral and printed directions, and distribution and collection of test materials, as well as testing time. There is no charge for the Regents' Test. The test is required of all undergraduates who have earned 30 semester hours.


Register for the Regents' Test through your S.H.I.P. account. There you will find dates, times, instructions, and locations.

Recommended Preparation for the Regents' Test
    Sample Regents' Questions
    • Which do you believe has been more influential in your life, good luck (chance) or good decisions? Discuss.
    • Explain why you do or do not smoke.
    • Describe and discuss the images of women presented in recent movies and television.
    • How is the threat of AIDS changing dating habits? Explain.
    • If you could be a cast member of any movie ever made, which film would you choose? Why?
    • What types of reading materials do you prefer? Explain.
    • What was the most important event of your life? Discuss its importance.
    • If you were to set up a personal museum of the most significant objects you own, what would you include? Why?
    • What foreign country would you like to visit, and why would you like to go there?
    • Explain why you do or do not like having picnics.
